Cabin Fever? 10 Fun Ways to Keep Toddlers & Preschoolers Busy Indoors This Winter
When the temperature drops and going outside isn’t an option, keeping little ones entertained indoors can feel like an impossible task. As a mom currently in the middle of stir crazy children in the middle of winter, this has been a huge struggle as of late. Toddlers and preschoolers are full of energy, and if they don’t have an outlet, cabin fever can quickly set in for the whole family. Instead of counting down the hours until bedtime, try these engaging, creative, and fun activities that will keep everyone entertained (and maybe even wear the kids out before nap time!).
1. Indoor Obstacle Course
Transform your living room into a mini adventure zone! Use pillows, chairs, blankets, and toys to create a fun obstacle course. Have your little ones crawl under tables, jump over cushions, and balance on a “tightrope” (a strip of tape on the floor). Bonus: This burns energy and improves motor skills!
2. DIY Sensory Bins
Sensory play keeps little hands busy while stimulating their minds. Fill a bin with rice, dried beans, or kinetic sand and hide small toys inside for a treasure hunt. Add measuring cups, spoons, and scoops to keep things interesting. It’s an easy setup with hours of fun potential.
3. Dance Party!
When in doubt, dance it out! Turn up the music and have a family dance-off. Create a playlist of favorite songs, use scarves or ribbons for extra fun, and get moving. Not only is it a great way to burn energy, but it’s also an instant mood booster for everyone.
4. Indoor Camping
Who says you need the outdoors for a camping trip? Set up a play tent or make one with blankets and pillows. Bring in flashlights, tell stories, and enjoy “campfire” snacks like s’mores made in the microwave. Add some stuffed animals for the full outdoor experience!
5. Baking Together
Toddlers love to help in the kitchen! Choose an easy recipe like cookies, muffins, or homemade pizza. Let them mix ingredients, scoop batter, or sprinkle toppings. It’s a fun way to teach basic math, introduce new textures, and of course—enjoy some delicious treats together.
6. Arts & Crafts Extravaganza
Set up a craft station with paper, stickers, washable markers, glue, and anything else you have on hand. Try handprint art, homemade greeting cards, or even an easy DIY playdough recipe. Creativity knows no limits, and the mess is worth the memories!
7. Balloon Games
Balloons are magic for little kids! Play games like “keep the balloon in the air,” use them for a mini indoor volleyball match, or tape them to a string for a fun balloon paddle game. No matter how you use them, balloons are always a win.
8. Storytime with a Twist
Make reading extra exciting by acting out stories, using silly voices, or setting up a “storytime theater” where kids can put on a mini performance. You can also create your own books together by letting kids draw pictures while you write their stories.
9. Bathtub Playtime (Without the Bath!)
If you’re running out of ideas, turn the bathtub into an indoor play space. Fill it with toys, let kids “wash” their dolls or toy cars, or even have a glow-stick bath party in the dark. It’s a mess-free way to keep kids occupied for a while!
10. Movie & Popcorn Night
Sometimes, a cozy movie night is just what everyone needs. Pick a family-friendly movie, grab some blankets, and make popcorn together. To make it extra special, set up a mini concession stand where kids “order” their snacks before the show starts.
Winter days inside don’t have to be boring! With a little creativity, you can turn any indoor day into an adventure. Whether you’re crafting, dancing, or setting up an indoor campsite, these activities will help keep the whole family entertained and create fun memories along the way.
